Just watched the Hunger Games, thought it was so-so.

I Enjoyed parts of it, mainly the actual games and surviving in the forest, but I got the impression the film didn't know what it wanted to be. It was sort of a dystopian satire/survival thing with a wooly love story tacked onto it. Were they actually in love or was the girl pretending to be in the hope of getting help from the outside, or for 'ratings' later on? Also, her friend/wannabe boyfriend back in the district was a totally pointless character, as was her mother to a lesser extent. Too long as well. More than anything I came away thinking it could have made a great TV series.

i think the questions you ask are answered pretty clearly in the books, de haaff - but it's unfortunate the movie didn't make some of the things more clear.

It's weird that the movie itself is exactly the thing as it sets out to critisize. A commercial application of violence as entertainment.

Djavulen- I think it comes pretty close to the paradox you describe...
...but that history presentation on the projector in District 12 at the start did explain that the Hunger Games were the Capitol's way of letting everyone use violence to get a better life, instead of resorting to violent rebellion. It's clear that no-one in the Districts finds this arrangement glorious or entertaining.

I'm looking forward to more films like the Hunger Games...
The part where Katniss steps on stage and goes into sense-numbing stage-fright had me on the edge of my seat, since she's completely out of her element. There were many parts in the film that took liberties on reality, but it's impossible to ignore that it's building up to something for the next film. Woody Harrelson's character going from a defeated drunk to a sober and resourceful mentor indicates this to me the most.

sorry about the editz :croak:

Agreed Amoe. Pacing felt way too rushed for my liking.

Because dubstep is the new disco :bb:
The Eagles are the soundtrack accompaniment to contemporary Sisyphus riding two escalators up and down a hill with a small rock in his hand for eternity.

:fcuk: I already said it on my Facebook feed but when I tried to see Cabin the projector failed somewhere in the middle. But I heard there's a bay with a ship sailing in carrying illicit bounty which can solve my problem...

So it's about a cab in the woods? That could be very convenient if you're lost but probably not very financially feasible for the cab driver.

it's not a new film, but i caught legend of the guardians: the owls of ga'hoole on hbo tonight. the story was definitely nothing special - pretty standard fare with the characters and plot points you expect. the animation though? gorgeous! so many of the scenes are totally stunning and the movie is really just beautiful to watch, even if the script is a bit of a let down.

You should see Thor before seeing Avengers. The Iron Mans and Captain America are fairly relevant. The last two Hulk films definitely aren't important.

I thought Chronicle was a really good movie. It's the kind of superpower movie I can get behind, very nice. Got a lot of Akira vibes from it.
